  • What Are Some Very Good Mystery, Fantasy, Suspense Books?

Posted by admin on March 5th, 2010 and filed under mystery books | 15 Comments »

I’m looking for something new to read over the summer, and I am not sure what I should read… Any suggestions? I like suspense books, fantasy books, and mystery books. I think that my favorite though of those three types is susupense. I really like books that you get so into that you don’t want to put them down. Someone tell me some good books!! :)

    <3 Sarah!

I’d go with ‘Northern Lights’ by Philip pullman – favourite book of all time, well the trilogy – you may know it as ‘the golden compass’ it’s the first book in the ‘His Dark Materials’ trilogy

Read any of the ones Barbara Michaels wrote. She also writes under another name, but I forget it. She writes good stories. She wrote the ghost story that scared me the most, I don’t know why, called "Ammie, Come Home". It was written in the 70s and some social parts are fairly dated now, but it is still a good read.

In it the first sign of the ghost’s appearance is the curtains moving, as in a draft. I stayed up late all one night reading it, in the dark, with just a table lamp on. I had one of those sliding patio doors covered with long drapes. As I was reading, they began to ripple and sway in and out. I can tell you that at that minute I understood the phrase, "my blood ran cold". It did. I was paralyzed. And then, one of my cats walked out from behind the curtain.

I like the sword of truth series by Terry Goodkind, they are more on the lengthy side though, around 700 to 800 pages per book. The first one is Wizards First Rule, theres 12 of them so it might keep you busy for awhile depending on your reading level, I finish them in about a week just reading around 2 hours before I go to sleep. Oh, almost forgot it is Suspense/Fantasy I guess I’m not sure what you mean on Suspense, it uses magic and the sorts. I can hardly put them down most of the time, one night I stayed up an extra four hours because I just couldn’t put it down.

      Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier
Very Suspenseful. But give it a chance if you read it the first couple of chapters read slow but are important to understand the rest of the book. I highly recommend it. But if you do read it don’t read the sequels they are by other authors and don’t bring justice to the original.

Swan Song, by Robert R. McCammon is my favourite, want-to-read-it-from-cover-to-cover book. Patricia Perry does good fantasy (Quest for the Source of Darkness, the second of the trilogy is called The Fortress of Darkness and will be released in a few months). Michael Chrighton (sp?) is well known for his suspense thrillers.

The Artemis Fowl series is certainly "different" from whatever else is on my bookshelf, and is basically fantasy.

      Hi,
Sometimes people go to tried and true authors, but why not check out a new author? Check out books written by Vicki Delany or Julia Pomeroy–both write suspense novels. I know these authors and they have great books! If you want change of pace, read my books–they’re mysteries, set in Harlem–a lil pathos, a lil’ humor. Hard Luck and Trouble: A Landlord’s Tale and Down and Dirty: Another Landlord’s Tale.
In any case, have a happy summer of reading.
      Best,
