Mystery books: anything by Robert B Parker or Tony Hillerman.

Fantasy:

JRR Tolkien = Hobbit and Lord of the Rings
Stephen Donaldson = The 6 book Chronicles of Thomas Covenent series or the 2 book Mordant’s Need series

I love fantasy. Here are some of my favorite fantasy books and authors. James Patterson (Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment), Lois McMaster Bujold (Paladin of Souls), Juliet Marillier, Gail Carson Levine (Ella Enchanted), Donita K. Paul (Dragonspell, Dragonquest), C.S.Lewis (Chronicles of Narnia), J.R.R.Tolkien (Lord of the Rings), J.K.Rowling (Harry Potter), Tamora Pierce (Lioness Quartet, Immortals Quartet, Protector of the Small Quartet, Tricksters' series, Circle of Magic Quartet, and the Cirle Opens Quartet), Ted Dekker (The Circle Trilogy), and Frank Perretti (The Veritas Project, The Oath, The House, Prophet, and others). All of these authors are good authors. I have enjoyed all the books that I have listed. I would suggest them to all ages. The books by Tamora Pierce are not what guys generally read, but I think everybody else will love them. Hope you find some books you will enjoy.

fantasy–anything written by margaret weis & tracy hickman (esp. trilogies in dragonlance world), gail carson levine (mostly for teens, though), patricia c. wrede (light but fun).

mystery–anything written by dame agatha christie, esp. and then there were none.
