Basically tell when you need to speed past something that needs to be there but is not worth showing. Tell when it is stronger than showing. And tell when doing transitions.

Actually, it has less to do with trying to avoid vocabulary; its simply that a mater of Not talking down to the reader (or over the readers head.)
As long as there is enough laymens English to provide a continual meaning, then yes, you may insert high vocabulary in your fiction.

(Although, I have not read the Twilight series or watched the on-scene adaptation. How does the writer handle descriptions?)

ummmm OMG… when you said to think of a scene and then describe it, I immediatley chose the beginning scene of Pulp Fiction (the ‘Royal with Cheese’ scene) … sooo weird that Pulp Fiction came up later on!
