John Wyndham wrote some excellent sci fi books which are also easy to read, Day of the Triffids and The Midwich Cuckoos are two of my favourites and seem to fit your requirements.
References :
How mature are we talking here? Is juvenile sci-fi okay?

Assuming you're not too picky and just want something fairly representative and approachable, I would suggest:
- Foundation (series) (Isaac Asimov)
- Dominic Flandry (series) (Poul Anderson)
- Space Cadet (Robert Heinlein)
- Time Storm (Gordon Dickson)
- Colossus (Dennis Jones)
- Rendezvous with Rama (Arthur Clarke)
- The Moon is a Harsh Mistress (Robert Heinlein)
- Prey (Michael Crichton)
- The Lifeship (Harry Harrison)
- Methuselah's Children (Robert Heinlein)
- The Free Lunch (Spider Robinson)

Bear in mind that sci-fi tends to be rendered obsolete by real-world scientific and technological advances fairly quickly. The books I just mentioned above are far from immune. Ultimately, this is just something you'll have to roll with; it can be worth a few laughs and in the end it usually doesn't get in the way of good writing.

There are also some sci-fi novels which are decent, but I specifically recommend AGAINST starting with, as they are quite advanced or at least expect you to already be comfortable with general sci-fi concepts. Some of these include:
- Ringworld (series) (Larry Niven)
- Zones of Thought (series) (Vernor Vinge)
- Heorot (Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle, Stephen Barnes)
- Fossil (Hal Clement)
- The Boat of a Million Years (Poul Anderson)
- West of Eden (Harry Harrison)
- Building Harlequin's Moon (Larry Niven, Brenda Cooper)
References :
There was once a book called 'Stop asking the same question over and over...' it was a really good book, I enjoyed it and there was another one, one of my favourites actually called 'Leave Books&Authors to the professionals' so fucking ace, I admire that book. I really do.
References :
Ray Bradbury: the Martian Chronicles, the collection R is for Rocket
Arthur C. Clark: Childhood's End
Andre Norton: Judgement on Janus and Victory on Janus (if you saw the movie Avatar, James Cameron did not do an original story, and there are similar things in the Janus books, which were written 50 years ago) 2250 D: Starman's Son, Catseye, the Time Traders (she wrote a LOT of books; her earlier books are better)
HG Wells classics: the Time Machine, the War of the Worlds, the Island of Dr. Moreau
AE Van Vogt: the Weapon Shops of Isher, the War Against the Rull

Note, a lot of these you should be able to find at your local library.
References :
I've been reading science fiction (and fantasy) for several decades.

The Martian Chronicles, Ray Bradbury; most of his books are character-based.
Starship Troopers, Robert Heinlein; most of his books are straight-forward.
WASP, Eric Russell; action.
Slaughterhouse-Five, and Cat's Cradle, both by Kurt Vonnegut, are fun.
Michael Vey: The Prisoner of Cell 25, Richard Evans, is based on Earth.
Animal Farm, George Orwell.
The Lathe of Heaven, Ursula Le Guin. If you like that, The Left Hand of Darkness is one of many she's written.
