LOL. It’s like that old joke about the atheist who goes into an Irish bar and the bartender asks him if he’s Catholic or Protestant. He replies, “I’m an atheist.” The Irish bartender retorts, “Are you a Catholic atheist or a Protestant atheist?”

I have Spong’s “Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism.” But that’s on a different set of shelves from the set on which the books I mentioned in the video are sitting. It’s one of my favorite books, too.

      It’s a good and …
It’s a good and perceptive question. It’s about two things. First, as I said in my video about liberal and moderate Christianity, I think believers of all stripes must come to terms with the fact that the Bible doesn’t give its readers the option of regarding it as errant. When one truly wrestles with this, it presents a serious challenge to one’s faith. Second, hitting biblical inerrancy also allows me to reach the more conservative believers while highlighting the challenge to the others.

Hey Prof, this is out of left field, but I was wondering why you put so much emphasis on Biblical innerrancy, being that you were catholic?

One of the favourites on my shelves is Why Christianity Must Change Or Die by Bishop John Shelby Spong.

It doesn’t really make Christianity any more convincing. But I do love the inherent irony of a bishop applying a Darwinian principle (adapt or go extinct) to his own religion.

Another favourite is Jesus The Man by Barbara Thiering. Check it out.
