Besides the bible what are some Christian books that help your faith grow?

I really like Jeremy Driscoll’s work and "Everything Is Grace", a bio of St. Therese by Fr. Joseph Schmidt.

One Video EVERY Christian should watch!

Almost no Christians have read the Bible, an interesting irony given that it is purported to be the source of their religion.

When you do read the Bible, its like entering a mad house. The books of Moses are a bloodbath from beginning to end. The God of Moses appears to be a volcano, and worships in an orgy of blood and dismembered animals.

Then you get on to Jesus, and things really dont improve much. Jesus states that all the old laws about burning witches etc, given to Moses by God still stand, and Jesus spends most of his time healing the sick, casting out demons and preaching. The irony being that even after he gives his disciples magic powers to cast out demons, many of them still doubt that he is the son of God.

Anyway, this video just cuts out one short segment of the Bible, about witches, wizards and demons. All form part of the narrative of Jesus and God in the Bible. Remove these, and you rip out the credibility of the book on its big claims about Gods, and Sons of Gods and you reduce the Bible to merely a story book.

It is my reckoning that people can identify Harry Potter as a work of fiction. Why then should people struggle so much in identifying the Bible as a work of fiction?

What are your favorite Christian classic books?

Posted by admin on July 1st, 2010 and filed under christian books | 17 Comments »

I’m interested in reading christian classics. I’m interested in reading some Christian books from the past, not current day.

One of the best books that I have read is "The Bondage of The Will" by Martin Luther – Translated by J.I. Packer & O.R. Johnston. The almost 60 pages of historical and theological introduction by Packer and Johnston are really helpful.

Jesus, Interrupted by Bart D. Ehrman

The problems with the Bible-that New Testament scholar Bart Ehrman discussed in his New York Times bestseller Misquoting Jesus-are expanded exponentially in his new book JESUS, INTERRUPTED. Here we find not only that Christian scribes altered the texts of their sacred Scripture, but also that the books of Scripture themselves, in their original forms, are often completely at odds with one another on such key issues as:

    • Who Jesus was and how salvation works
    • Why the New Testament contains books that were forged in the names of the apostles by Christians living decades later
    • Did Paul, Matthew, John, and Jesus represent different religions?
    • How standard Christian doctrines were the inventions of still later theologians

These are not idiosyncratic perspectives of just one modern scholar: as Ehrman skillfully demonstrates, they have been the standard and widespread views of critical scholars for over a century. Why is it that most people have never heard such things? As Ehrman argues, it is because scholars have failed to communicate their findings with the general public, and because pastors who learn this information when studying for the ministry have chosen not to share it with the people in the pews.

What are some good Christian books about God?

Posted by admin on June 14th, 2010 and filed under christian books | 8 Comments »

I really wants some books that are meant for teenage girls actually. I really want to learn more about God. Yes, I have asked God into my heart. Yes, I am reading the Bible. But, are there any good books about him out there? Particularly by Elizabeth George.

i have read some good books by Max Lucado, so i’ll second that, particularly, When God Whispers Your Name. i’ve read several, but i think that’s my favorite.

also, i’ve greatly enjoyed Elisabeth Elliot’s writings, such as Passion and Purity, Through the Gates of Splendor. she’s a gifted writer and has such a heart for God.

you might also enjoy Lee Stroebel’s books about Christianity and any of C.S. Lewis’ works on Christianity as well. every Christian should read Mere Christianity. it might still be available free on line :)

i also suggest you pick up, My Utmost For His Highest, daily devotional by Oswald Chambers. it’s a classic and is very insightful.
