I want to write on the great depression, and I wondering if anyone had any suggestions as far as good books were concerned. Ideally, I would like to read two books with opposing views or juxtapositioning positions on certain factors. Any help would appreciated.

Andrew Marr’s making of modern Britain is really good and I’m reading it for history. It has some humour in it which is also good as well as facts. If that’s not really the kind of book you’re looking for there’s Anne Frank’s diary of course

So for my English class we have to choose our own book and read it. I need some good book suggestions. I don’t like girly, girly novels. I can deal with a little romance as long as it is not like kiss kiss all throughout the book. The book needs to be long, not as long as Harry Potter books, but longer than a kids book. It’s for an 8th grader. What are some intriguing books that you just loved to read?

The Hunger Games, although that may be a little mature for you? I think it’s aimed at 14 – 17 year olds though also City of Bones falls into this category – both are excellent though!

Ender’s Game
The Giver
Gathering Blue
Walk Two Moons
One of Those Hideous Books Where The Mother Dies ~ make sure you teacher will accept it, it’s written in poetry style, so has low word count
Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson

All of these were really good, I read them (except Hunger Games and City of Bones) between 6th and 9th grade

Non-fiction or fiction books please that are really good..
No fantasy book or series please.

Thank you!

Here are some links to book lists at goodreads.com. There are a lot more lists on the site. And you might want to leave young adult and look over the adult offerings.

234 books on the Most Exiting Upcoming Young Adult Books list
http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/153.Most_Exciting_Upcoming_YA_Books

429 books on the Best Teen Books About Real Problems
http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1736.Best_Teen_Books_About_Real_Problems

30 books on the Good Young Adult Nonfiction 2010-2011 list
http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/9056.Good_Young_Adult_Nonfiction_2010_2011_

Goodreads.com is a free website with thousands of books lists. You see the cover of the book and get a link to the book description. The lists are created by contributors who rate and review the books so you get a lot of input sometimes by hundreds of people.

At this site, for instance, you can pick science fiction and then get more specific lists like books that deal with time travel or aliens or robots. The main address is

http://www.goodreads.com/

paste the link I gave you above into your browser
click the explore tab (you don’t have to log in to use the site)
scroll down a bit to the genre tags and select what appeals to you
This site includes lists for children, young adults, adults, sci fi fiends, romance junkies, etc.

When you have time, just noodle around the website. There are three different types of search boxes and they don’t all show up on a page depending where you are. Book mark lists you like so you can find them later.

They have young adult selections but the grown up stuff will probably suit you also.

You can try the following books also:
The Pearl by John Steinbeck
Cannery Row by John Steinbeck
Animal Farm by George Orwell
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
His Dark Materials is a trilogy of fantasy novels by Philip Pullman
Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
anything by H.G. Wells
anything by Robert Louis Stevenson
Prisoner of Zenda by Anthony Hope
The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Emmuska Orczy

I wouldn’t bother with any of the programs that claim to help you write a novel. They tend to assume there’s One True Way to write a novel – fine if that fits with how you write, but frustrating if it doesn’t.

I like suspensful books, and I hated the beaconstreet girls, and most books by meg cabot. I loved the maximum ride series. I am not allowed to read books about vampires and my parents would prefer that I didn’t read books about ghosts, but they let me. Any suggestions?

Good for your parents–all the vampire books are super overrated.

Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones
Sarah Dessen novels, especially This Lullaby, Just Listen, and The Truth About Forever
the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine
The Two Princesses of Bamarre by Gail Carson Levine
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte’s got a bit of everything in it–mystery, romance, suspense–in my opinion it’s the greatest book ever.
Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro–a sci-fi drama, and one of the most beautiful and depressing books you will ever read!
The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi

If you like suspenseful stories, try Edgar Allen Poe. "The Telltale Heart," "The Black Cat," and "The Masque of the Red Death" are among his most famous.
I know James Patterson also writes mystery novels as well as the Max Ride books. I haven’t read any of them, but I hear they’re good.

are you talking about the books by Ellen Hopkins? They’re written in poem like form. There’s:
Crank (black-drugs), Glass (purple-drugs… it’s the second book following Crank), Impulse (red-suicide), Burned (white-rape), Identical (silver-also rape type i think), Fallout (yellow/gold -third book after Crank and Glass), Tricks (red -haven’t red this one yet) and I think one or two more.

i’m not sure if these are what you’re talking about, but even if they aren’t you should check them out they’re pretty good in my opinion.
