  • Can you make a decent living writing childrens books?

Posted by admin on April 30th, 2010 and filed under childrens books | 6 Comments »

And how do you go about getting the stories published? Any suggestions for a good publisher in Canada?

Only if you write a lot of them and they are popular. Although some of that is based on what you mean by decent living.

    Good Luck :)

List of Publishers publishing books of English grammar for School & Colleges?

Posted by admin on April 30th, 2010 and filed under publishing books | 1 Comment »

I am in need of the names of the publishing houses which publish books of English grammar for Schools and Colleges.

You won’t find this information available for free from the Web. You should, however, be able to find it in your local research library.

Ask for the Literary Market Place (LMP) on disk. It is searchable, and you should be able to find all publishers doing college texts, and perhaps even texts on grammar.

Alternatively, use your favorite search engine with many keywords.

Last choice, try searching Books In Print (which is on the web, but which charges, I think). That will give you the titles as well as the publishers.

I need new books. Any suggestions based on the following list of ones I like?

I really like books that have a sci-fi twist into the romance, or just one of the two. I loved these:
    Vampire Academy
    Twilight Saga
    Sookie Stackhouse novels
    Message in a Bottle
    Harry Potter
    Breakfast at Tiffany’s

So anything related to these. Any good ideas? I’m always up for something new!

    x. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (Definitely read this!)
    x. Tithe by Holly Black
    x. Flowers For Algernon by Daniel Keyes
    x. Things Not Seen by Andrew Clements
    x. Inkheart by Cornelia Funke
    x. So Far From the Bamboo Grove by Yoko Watkins
    x. Tropical Kiss by Jan Coffey

    Happy reading. :]

Do I need permission (copyright) to use books to teach small classes Can I just buy used copies online?

Posted by admin on April 30th, 2010 and filed under used books | 2 Comments »

My husband and I own a small business doing computer repairs, resumes, copy, fax, etc. and I am an ESL teacher so we want to offer some classes. I see many used textbooks online. Can I use them to teach or do I need to buy the books from the publisher. What about if I show a movie or TV show in class and use it to teach, is that ok?

As to the books- they are used, but they are official copies, so that’s ok. In fact, colleges buy used books every semester and resell them and students buy them because they are soooooo much cheaper ( and they are highlighted :) ) . If you show a movie or tv show, you will most likely be fine because no one investigates on such a small scale. But each show or movie is different as to whether or not you can use it. Some say its fine, some want you to simply let them know, some want you to jump through hoops. But, unless you start making copies of the movies and selling them, they won’t care anyway, so just use them.

Are there any good websites with lists of good books for Christian teens?

Hi, I was just wondering of anyone could recommend any good books for Christian teen girls between the ages of 14-16?or a good website with a list of books for Christian teen girls between the ages of 14-16?maybe a book with high schoolish characters and kinda romance and friendship and stuff.

I’m in that age range and some of my favorites are The O’Malley Series by Dee Henderson and the Uncommon Heroes Series by Dee Henderson. They are romance/mystery/action books and are AMAZING. They’re Christian books, but in a bit of a different way… They’re AMAZING. I seriously suggest reading them. There’s also books by Frank Paretti and Ted Dekker. They’re Christian horror/thriller books. I love Monster and House. :)

What was that website that let you read peoples unpublished books online for free?
It was a site that people could post their unpublished books for other people to read, and so that maybe a publisher would come across it and want to publish it.

I’ve tried searching for this website

if you could send me the link…
    thanks

Can anyone recommend any good fiction books?

Posted by admin on April 30th, 2010 and filed under fiction books | 11 Comments »

Hi all. I need some book suggestions, as I am running out of things to read. I like a variety of subjects: the Harry Bosch series by Michael Connelly, the Alex McKnight series by Steve Hamilton, Jasper Fforde, mystery/thrillers, historical fiction, horror (no vampires, though), and kids’ series like Harry Potter and Bloody Jack by L. A. Meyer.

Authors/topics I don’t like are: John Connelly, Stephen Hunter, chick lit, westerns, military fiction, sci-fi with weird character/place names like Xbarbax, and anything too fluffy or sappy or predictable. I’ve read 2 of the "Origin In (Blank)" books by JD Robb (Nora Roberts) and thought they were okay but I don’t want to read 20 more books with the same two sex scenes over and over again.

    Can you help? Thanks!

If you liked the Harry Bosch novels, then you would probably like many of Jeffrey Deaver’s books. He has a series with Lincoln Rhyme as the central character (Denzel Washington in the Bone Collector) that are really good. I actually like them much better than the Harry Bosch novels. I also like all of Micheal Crichton’s books, such as Jurassic Park, Congo, Eaters of the Dead, ect.

What are some books that teens should read before they age to 21?

My plan is to grow up with a good head on my shoulders, and I believe that books are the key.
I like books with meaning, but don’t we all?
I need books about, love, friendship, hope, family, life, happiness, soul, knowlege, etc, etc.
I am thirteen, and i read everything.
Any books with good lessons, and are just plain breath taking? Thank you!

I think these books are absolutely perfect for you, they’re just what you’re looking for, and they’re classics so they are things that I think everyone should read:

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
    Emma by Jane Austen
    Persuasion by Jane Austen
Sense and Sensiblity by Jane Austen
    Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
    Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
    Jane Eyre by Charlottle Bronte

Trust me you’ll love them! They have every quality that you have mentioned and they are timeless and loved by so many people! I could read them all several times and never get tired of them. They all have good lessons and are just plain breath taking!

How do I straighten paperback books that have been bent/warped from improper storage?

Posted by admin on April 30th, 2010 and filed under paperback books | 4 Comments »

you need to hold them over a steaming kettle for 5 minutes, then place it on a flat surface and place a lot of books/weight on them to crush them flat. let dry and enjoy.
