  • What are some good Christmas childrens books?

Posted by admin on February 7th, 2010 and filed under childrens books | 4 Comments »

I’d like to teach my 2 year old more about Christmas and get him excited about it through reading books to him (among other things). Does anyone know of good children’s books on Christmas that would hold his attention? We’re Christian so books about Christ’s birth would be awesome too!

The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey. Pretty much the greatest Christmas book ever, but i’m not sure if it’s good for a 2 year old…

How do I find someone interested in publishing my books?

Posted by admin on February 7th, 2010 and filed under publishing books | 3 Comments »

Through the years I’ve written several books (tech, sci, novels), I got some in the internet, but never published any, but since my friends say they are very good, and that could be a way of living, I decided to ask the way to do it, if someone can help me I’ll be gratful. It could be better if I could do it in my mother language (spanish), any way I can also do it in english, dutch, and even german and french.
    Thanks 2 all

Choosing a publisher for your work can be a difficult task. Finding a publisher who will publish in Spanish or any of the other languages you mentioned is only half the battle. You must evaluate the acceptability of the contract terms that is required of each publisher. I have a free download of my publishing journey on my web site www.myqualitywriting.com. It provides my experience in getting published and some guidelines in reviewing contracts of publishers. It may help you in choosing a publisher. It also provides some opportunities for marketing as it is primarily, if not all, the responsibility of an author to create an interest in your writing. There are thousands of books published each year and your books needs to stand out from the others. Having your book published in Spanish or other languages may be a positive advantage in getting published.

Another thing I want to mention is that with all the technology available today you do not need an agent to get published. I did not use an agent in getting my first or second book published. If your work is good you will find a publisher who will publish it.

Another source of information is submitting questions to writers forums such as the one on www.writersweekly.com. There is a wealth of information from other writers on this site who can offer some suggestions on publishers that may be interested in your work. Also I would recommend signing up for the newsletter that is available free as it has great information.

I wish you all the success you deserve.

Could you recommend some good fantasy or mystery books ?

Posted by admin on February 7th, 2010 and filed under mystery books | 13 Comments »

I need some new authors to read. Have you read any good fantasy or mystery books lately that you could recommend? Thanks!
I like Dawn Cook, John Grisham, Laurell Hamilton, Kelley Armstronf, Kim Harrison and many others who I can’t think of now. :)

I love fantasy. Here are some of my favorite fantasy books and authors. James Patterson (Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment), Lois McMaster Bujold (Paladin of Souls), Juliet Marillier, Gail Carson Levine (Ella Enchanted), Donita K. Paul (Dragonspell, Dragonquest), C.S.Lewis (Chronicles of Narnia), J.R.R.Tolkien (Lord of the Rings), J.K.Rowling (Harry Potter), Tamora Pierce (Lioness Quartet, Immortals Quartet, Protector of the Small Quartet, Tricksters’ series, Circle of Magic Quartet, and the Cirle Opens Quartet), Ted Dekker (The Circle Trilogy), and Frank Perretti (The Veritas Project, The Oath, The House, Prophet, and others). All of these authors are good authors. I have enjoyed all the books that I have listed. I would suggest them to all ages. The books by Tamora Pierce are not what guys generally read, but I think everybody else will love them. Hope you find some books you will enjoy.

What books are most popular in a used bookstore?

Posted by admin on February 7th, 2010 and filed under used books | 6 Comments »

I’m opening a small bookstore, selling new (few) and nice, clean used books. I’ve managed a bookstore before but we had an inventory of over 10,000 books…I’m starting out with only 1000 books. I’m wondering if I have enough of the right mix books…any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Also, I don’t have much capitol and am relying mainly on my books and those I take in as trade or buy will help keep the store going. OMG, what have I gotten myself in?

I would suggest romance/mystery/fiction. People FLY through those novels and manage to accumulate a ton of books before shipping them off to the used book stores. And I would imagine they would be looking around for something they haven’t read yet. Whenever I go to a used bookstore and see someone trading in bags full of books they’re almost always those mass market romance novels!

I’ve worked at Borders and one thing I noticed was how popular those romance novels are. I’ve tried helping people find books and they would take forever because they couldn’t remember if they’ve already read the book, THAT’S how many books they’ve read. Or all romance is basically the same, cough cough. My aunt and grandma (and i’ve seen friends mom’s who are like this too) have several book cases full of Nora Roberts and Danielle Steele, etc etc. So that genre gets read A LOT and they churn those suckers out like it’s nothing.

I’d also suggest young adult novels as well. Those are becoming increasingly popular with kids and adults. Everyone’s looking for the next Harry Potter (good luck =D ) or the next Twilight, and probably want to do so as cheaply as possible.

    Good luck!

Have any depression books from the Christian perpspective?

Posted by admin on February 7th, 2010 and filed under christian books | 5 Comments »

I’m teaching a series about defeating depression at my church. I’ve got some great secular books about depression but i was wondering are there any good CHRISTIAN books with scriptures discussing this issue…. give name and author if u know it. thanks

C.S. Lewis wrote some books dealing with the topic, especially after his wife died. Check out "The Problem of Pain" and "A Grief Observed."

Edited to Add: I would consider C.S. Lewis to be a great Man of God and he suffered from depression. It is because we are human. It happens and I commend you for tackling it and including a Biblical perspective. There are characters in the Bible who suffered from this as well. In fact, there is a great article in Time magazine this week that shows Mother Theresa dealing with feelings of inadequacy and depression.

What are the benefits of reading non fiction books everyday?

Posted by admin on February 7th, 2010 and filed under fiction books | 5 Comments »

Hi what are the benefits of reading non fiction books everyday? Will it improve your critical thinking, writing skills etc etc?

Every self-made wealthy person in America tends to read a LOT of non-fiction books. It’s like having access to millions of experts willing to share their expertise with you one-on-one.

It will definitely improve your critical thinking, especially if you read unusual books that challenge the status quo.

There are non-fiction books on how to improve your writing skills too! I have an older version of this book that my dad gave me after I think he got it at a business seminar. He said it forever changed the way he writes, so he gave it to me to read:
    http://www.amazon.com/Write-Top-Writing-Corporate-Success/dp/0812968980/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1243808991&sr=8-1#reader

The copy I have didn’t have the "for Corporate Success" part in the title but it did focus on "reader-centered writing". It’s actually a pretty good book though, to help streamline and improve clarity in your writing.

There are other similar books out there too.

What are some books that have to do with teenage partying and experamenting with drugs?

Posted by admin on February 7th, 2010 and filed under books | 5 Comments »

I read the whole ellen hopkins series and I was wondering if there are any other books like that that young adults can read?
Im trying to read books about partying so I can basically read about it and not do it so I get the experiance by reading it if that makes any sense.
I read tweak and I loved the book.
Are there any other books that have to do with partying and experamenting?

Can’t think of any books off the top of my head, but the movie Thirteen is precisely about that.

Where can I buy plastic overing for my paperback books?

Posted by admin on February 7th, 2010 and filed under paperback books | 6 Comments »

Libraries use plastic covers over their paperback books, do you know if I could by these from anywhere? Thanks! =)

Try clear Contact Paper. You can find it in hardware stores, Target, Walmart, K-mart, etc. That’s what we used at home when my sisters and I were still in school. You can also buy clear vinyl by the yard, in any fabrics store or Wal-Mart.
